2003 Scholars

Katrina N. Edwards
Katrina Edwards is a senior at Texas Southern University. She was introduced to golf at age 8 and currently enjoys a golf handicap of 7.5. She was a member of the Student Business Leadership Organization at Texas Southern University, captain of the Women's Golf Team, and assistant director of the Jesse H. Jones School of Business Golf Committee. Katrina was the recipient of a full four-year athletic golf scholarship, recipient of the Bill Dickey Scholarship in 1999, member of All-SWAC (NCAA Division I) Golf Tournament Team and MVP, Women's Collegiate Golf Team in 2001 and 2002. She plans to graduate in May 2004 with a business management degree. She aspires to own her own golf-related business and play in amateur tournaments with the LPGA.

When asked how the sport of golf has played a role in her life, Katrina answered, "After my first year, I got the experience of playing in competition for the first time, and fell in love with competition. It showed me what determination means and how dedication is a priority in this game. Now being in college 3,000 miles away from home, determination and dedication from golf has gotten me an Athletic Golf Scholarship for the last four years ... I am now at Texas Southern University Business School on the golf committee recruiting students and teaching the game of golf - from the different grip styles, to the swing, to the etiquette, to the terminology... This game has played a role of giving me a way to get an education, and I am giving the game of golf some new players."

Harold C. Villere III
Harold Villere III is a junior at Jackson State University. He has been guided through the sport of golf by his grandfather and father to become a scratch golfer. He is a member of Jackson State University Golf Team and recipient of The Academic Award-Jackson State Golf Team and Student-Athlete Academic Award at Jackson State University. He was selected as the Most Dedicated Player by the Jackson State Golf Team in Spring 2002. Academically, Harold has been recognized for his achievements as a National Dean's List Scholar and All-American Scholar. He has been nominated for the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. He has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 and plans to graduate in 2005 with a degree in accounting.

When asked what would he do to create opportunities for others to benefit from the sport of golf, Harold responded, "I want to establish a summer golf school that caters to minority junior golfers ... I remember having the most fun I have ever had playing golf at a minority golf tournament in Florida, the First Annual William 'Bill' Dickey Invitational. There were minority golfers from different cultures who had been exposed to many of the same things I had been exposed to in my upbringing ... I remember telling my dad that every minority golfer should have the opportunity to play in an event like that before they reach the collegiate ranks ... I know how it feels to be the only person of your age or your background at a golf course and trying to enjoy this game that has traditionally been for the rich. It is not the best feeling in the world. Since making this golf school a major goal of mine, I have talked to others about it, who all said they wish there was a school like that when they were coming up in the game. With my strong will and determination along with prayers, I know I will be able to reach this goal."

Pernon L. Dunston - Golfworks Intern

Age: 16
Hometown: Springfield Gardens, NY
School: New York Military Academy
Year: Entering Senior Year
Club: Deepdale Golf Club, Manhasset, NY
Goals: Play golf at Duke University

Pernon entered the GOLFWORKS program in 2001 at the age of 14. He was introduced to the program by a friend of his father's who knew that Pernon liked golf.

Pernon works at Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset, New York. His assignments include greeting guests for outings, assisting in the pro shop, driving range and clubhouse and helping to coordinate special events at the club. He also helps out caddying when there are large outings. Manager Bob Heaney noted that "Pernon has all qualities you want to see in a young man and in an employee. He is polite, friendly and cooperative, and the membership has really taken a liking to him."

A naturally quiet and shy person, Pernon feels that working at the club has helped him become more outgoing and confident and taught him "how to behave around people." It has also helped his golf game. Pernon receives lots of guidance from head pro Darrell Kestner, one of the Met Area's top teaching pros, and has opportunities to play and practice with the teaching staff, and even some members. Kestner said, "Pernon works very hard on his game and is very disciplined. He takes instruction well and has all the ingredients to be a successful golfer."

Pernon attends New York Military Academy where he is an honor student, and captain of both the golf and swimming teams. He also plays Soccer and Lacrosse. He is also involved with community volunteer service and has participated in the MGA Foundation Day of Golf at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, New York. This past summer, Pernon was one of two students selected by the MGA Foundation to attend the Chivas Irons Society Tennessee PGA Golf Camp, an all-expense-paid week of golf instruction and life skills training with aspiring golfers from around the country. He called it his "best ever golf experience."

Pernon will be applying to Duke University next year and hopes to make the golf team. He thinks he would like to turn professional but he would like to complete his education first.

Courtney Hylton - Golfworks Intern

Age: 17
Hometown: Bronx, NY
School: Truman High School
Year: Junior Year
Club: The Apawamis Club, Rye, NY
Goals: Attend college and study turf management

Courtney Hilton is in her second year in the GOLFWORKS program at The Apawamis Club in Rye, New York. At the club she helps out in the pro shop as well as on the driving range but also spends a good deal of time helping to run the club's many kids camps and junior sports programs. General Manager Rob Schlingmann, of Apawamis has been very pleased with Courtney's work ethic and high level of maturity. Schlingmann says, "Courtney has displayed a wonderful sense of friendliness and responsibility at work and has been a delight for both the staff and the members."

Courtney wanted a job with GOLFWORKS to help improve her golf game while being able to learn more about the golf industry. She would like to play golf in college and GOLFWORKS has been an excellent way of allowing her to practice and get better acquainted with the game on all levels. Courtney's performance in GOLFWORKS has earned her a trip to The First Tee's National Golf Camp this summer and she was also selected to represent the MGA Foundation at a six day trip to the Chivas Irons Society Golf Camp in Nashville Tennessee, in July.

In June, Courtney was invited to participate in the very first Lew Rudin Memorial Tournament for First Tee of Metropolitan New York at Deepdale Golf Club.

Despite some past difficulties with schoolwork, Courtney has worked extremely hard the past two years to improve her grades and hopes to apply to college two years from now, and, hopefully, play golf. She also would like to enter into an agronomy program and study to become a golf course superintendent.
